DMC Slovenia: Far More than Meets the Eye
With just a total area of 20,273 sq kms and neatly tucked away between its larger and more famous neighbours, Italy, Croatia, Hungary and Austria, you could be forgiven for almost missing Slovenia when looking at a map of Southern Europe. In fact the country was once actually omitted from a map! But those that have been here with DMC Slovenia, never forget.
They say that good things come in small packages, and nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to this wonderfully compact, but incredibly diverse little country. Slovenia boasts a unique position in the world. Being wedged between the soaring peaks of the European Alps and the shimmering Adriatic Sea, the clash of cool alpine air and warm Mediterranean climate has sculpted a landscape that changes dramatically over such as small surface area. Slovenia has reaped the benefits.
Now the advantage to Slovenia being so small is that your local DMC Slovenia can show you so much in such as short time. In early spring you can literally ski on a mountaintop in the morning, have lunch in a vineyard and then be on the Adriatic coast for sunset and dinner. The capital city, Ljubljana, sits in the geographical centre of the country, and most of the great sights are within a one-hour drive. Now we all know that there is nothing worse than sitting in a car for hours to get to your destination. Our DMC Slovenia will ensure that this is the least of your problems.
If you need another incentive to use our DMC, Slovenia has some of the best food in Europe. Its geographical location has resulted in a unique blend of Slavic, Italian, Austrian and Hungarian cuisine. And if you feel you’ve over-indulged yourself then you can purge that guilt in one of the many natural health spas across the country, where pure natural springs have produced lush thermal spas and pure mineral drinking water.
Your biggest problem will be deciding which of the numerous sights to see, or even wondering if you will miss something. That’s why it’s best to use our DMC. Slovenia is so packed with amazing places that many still remain a hidden gem. When you are limited for time, you could easily miss out on these. So let us plan an unforgettable itinerary for you.
The Capital
Slovenia’s Baroque and Modernist capital city encircles a magnificent castle that crests a hilltop, and from its watchtower you can clearly see the majestic peaks of the alpine mountain ranges beckoning you northwards. Slovenian people love the outdoors, so much so that they don’t need to be told to look after their environment, it’s in their nature. So it’s no surprise that Slovenia, and consequently Ljubljana, is renowned for being one of the most environmentally friendly countries in the world. The Slovene capital is an outdoor Mecca; virtually car-free, a walk along its lively, leafy riverside set among elegant architecture, built throughout the ages, and sprawling terrace cafes and restaurants is possibly one of the most pleasant experiences you’ll ever have in a European capital. Ljubljana is the base for our DMC Slovenia.
The Mountainous North
With a population of just around 2 million, there’s plenty of open space in this little country. Even Slovenes head out of the city at their earliest convenience. Beyond the city limits, amid the mountainous landscape, is a sea of lush green valleys, where crystal clear water is in abundance. Lake Bled, one of many glacial lakes, is famous for its beautiful island church, which on a misty morning, is like something out of a fairy tale. But despite its popularity, the town remains relatively low key. You’ll find no high-rise hotels here, but all of these amenities have been neatly blended into the environment. Ask our DMC Slovenia for more information.
Bled is the gateway to the Triglav National Park, where a wealth of outdoor activities and sights await, from glacial lakes, gushing rivers and breathtaking mountain passes.
The Wild South
With 58% of the country covered in forest, it comes as no surprise that Slovenia is the 3rd most forested country in Europe. Nowhere is this more prevalent than down south, where large tracts of forest remain untouched. Wildlife lovers will be pleased to know that bears, wolves and all manner of wildlife roam freely throughout this region. Our DMC Slovenia can hook you up with locals who provide visitors with the opportunity to view and photograph them from the safety of specially built hides.
Wine country
For lovers of good food and fine wine, our DMC Slovenia can find a place for you too. From east to west, the rich fertile soils are perfect for producing wine. In the east, among the rolling green hills you’ll find numerous wineries producing sumptuous white wines, and even the unique wine is known as Cviček.
In the west, as the alpine mountains roll off towards the Adriatic Sea, it has created a karst limestone plateau, rich in red soil from which the ruby red Teran and Refošk wines are produced. The local wind, known as Bora, is a dry, gusty wind that howls down from the plateau and is harvested by the locals to air-dry the extra special Karst Cured Ham (Prosciutto). There are many great vineyards where you can sample this, but we at DMC Slovenia know the best.
And just when you think you’ve seen it all, there is an underground world to explore. The western limestone plateau hides a magnificent network of underground caves and tunnels to explore; one in particular was connected to a magnificent castle built into a hillside and used by a daring knight to outwit an entire army for over a year. Several larger ones are open to the general public, such as Postojna and Škocjan, but there are many more smaller ones to explore which are often far more fascinating, but less visited. Whether you are an experienced potholer or not, our DMC Slovenia can help find you the right adventure.
We at DMC Slovenia love the Slovenian coast. While it may rank as the 7th shortest coastline in the world, like the rest of the country it’s packed with wonders to see. Enjoying on average 2,255 hours of sunshine per year, it’s a great place to head if you’re looking for something a bit warmer. Add to that the elegant Venetian architecture, great seafood and glorious opportunities for sailing, it’s a great way to end your trip, for now at least.
So, as there is so much to see in such as small country, why not let your DMC Slovenia plan your perfect itinerary and take you to all these and many more wonderful places, as well as taking away all the work?
